Stricken ship’s chemical cargo threatens Devon coast ANTI-POLLUTION teams were on standby last night after a stricken cargo ship began shedding containers and threatened to break up and spill hazardous chemicals a mile off the Devon coast, writes Maurice Chittenden. About 50 containers fell from the Napoli yesterday evening. Three that washed up on the beach at Branscombe were thought to contain car parts.
The ship is carrying nearly 2,400 containers, some holding toxic chemicals. They include pesticides, industrial chemicals and perfumes for high street shops. A spokesman for the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) said: “We are trying to assess where on the ship the containers fell from so we can establish whether any contain toxic chemicals.” The plight of the Napoli is one legacy of Britain’s worst storm for 17 years. Yesterday more than 50,000 people in southern and eastern England were still without electricity after Thursday’s storm toppled trees and power lines and left 13 people dead. Insurers say the bill could reach £1 billion. All 26 crew of the Napoli were rescued by Royal Navy helicopters during the storm after her engine room flooded 40 miles off Cornwall. The vessel was put under tow but being so battered by 15ft waves that the MCA decided to ground her off the coast. The Napoli is leaking diesel and was yesterday being surrounded by a boom to contain pollution. Salvage crews will this week try to remove the containers. More severe Gales
